Penusila Kshetram, the area surrounding Amma Sri Karunamayi’s

In Rapur (mandal) Penusila Kshetram, the area surrounding Amma Sri Karunamayi’s main center, impoverished villagers battle such difficulties as drought, lack of health care, lack of primary education, and lack of a political voice. Intimately familiar with this region, Amma has dedicated her life to lifting these villagers out of their most dire difficulties. Amma’s charitable projects provide critical and often life-saving assistance in a region where no other charities operate and where governmental assistance is nearly non-existent. These are truly forgotten people, but thanks to Amma, the villagers now have reason to hope. Aside from physical poverty, Amma recognizes the existence of emotional and spiritual poverty which exists around the world today. Through her international speeches and programs, Amma provides guidance, inspiration, and solace to thousands of people who come to her for comfort.

Approximately 58,000 destitute villagers were denied their hearth and home when they were forcibly moved by the government into desolate areas when their villages were flooded to build a reservoir. This reservoir known as the Kandaleru Dam was actually started in 1983, and the storage of water has been underway since 1991. Rapur to kandaler 14km distsnce.

These ill-fated villagers belonged to at least three mandals (administrative units) in the Nellore district mandal namely Rapur, Kaluvoy, and Chejerla. In the Rapul Mandal, some of the distressed villages are: Penubarthi, Ramkur, Nagavaripalli, Lingampalayem, Suddhamala, Obulayapalli, Gopasamudram, Gundavolu, Nellepalli, Sankratipalli, and Pokurupalli. The villages of Dacchur and Kammavari Palli in the Kaluvoy mandal and Kolapanaidupalli in the Chejerla mandal were also submerged during the flooding.

The Andhrapradesh Govt already issue the amount for each and evey individuals. but the funds are very low. These village dwellers were given inadequate funds to rebuild their homes and were forced to live in the most abysmal conditions, very often, not even fit for animals. Sorrowfully these people were forced to leave their homes; leave their dignity, roots and generations of tradition for shelters made of sticks, mud and blue tarps. In reality, they have nowhere else to go, to keep their body and soul together.
